I only got to know Rafael towards the end of his life. He was very cordial and quite generous with his time. Of course, he didn't remember that I had talked to him when I was a kid, following him around everyplace he played in Southern California, asking him questions and getting his autograph. I had all of his records and I tried to play all of his solos. What a dedicated man he was. He was able to reach a level of playing that will probably never be duplicated. I am happy that with the release of his records on CD, a whole new generation will be able to hear what monumental heights he had attained. He was a fine gentleman and also probably the greatest technician - on any instrument - who ever lived.
